We have all been told no talking politics or religion at a bar. Why is that? If the public house or tavern is a place where we come together, why can’t we talk about those topics? What is so taboo about it? Join us as we explore the role bars and taverns have played in the history of the United States and explore reasons why we are not supposed to talk about politics and religion in bars as we drink a Presidential Punch.

Grab your drinking partner, make a presidential punch (recipe below) and join us in a spirited conversation. Listen here…

Cocktail recipe:

Presidential Punch:

  • 2 oz Wild Turkey Rye
  • 1 3/4 oz Ironton Orange Liqueur
  • 1/4 oz Planteray Rum
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 1 oz Lemon Juice
  • 2 oz Peach Iced Tea (sweetened or unsweetened, dealer’s choice)
  • Garnish with a lemon slice and fresh grated nutmeg.

Clearly, a visit to Fraunces Tavern would do us all some good. There really is something special about walking in the steps of history. Check them out here.

Mentioned in this episode:

Jameson mentioned an article in Vox, “Why Don’t Americans Talk About Politics.” You can read it here.

Highly recommend checking out this TED Talk by Kathryn Schulz: On Being Wrong. Also highly recommend reading her book. It liberates the reader to acknowledge their own biases and celebrate that growth best comes when we realize and acknowledge that we could be wrong. Thank you for taking the time to listen. Let us know what you think, should we not talk politics and religion in the bar? What about those great moments that have started in the bar? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the spirited conversation.

Cheers!
